The real cowboy had to gather his or her cattle and get it to the train station to get a living. Farmers, tired of this, decided to make the first barbed wire fences, and destroyed the way of the cowboy. Hollywood's portrayal of the American Cowboy was off. They didn't square off with the local sheriff in town. They didn't stop run away trains and robbers. They were normal people, laid off work after the civil war.
