May 5th, 1906,
Disease spreads quickly through out the labor camp. Many of my fellow workers have caught Malaria, while a few of them have caught typhoid. I, myself, have contracted dysentery, and feel my strength waning as the construction of the canal slowly progresses. Three of the new laborers were squashed under a railway cart that got loose yesterday, and a young white laborer named Tyler had his leg crushed from a train we had no idea had been coming. We forgot Tyler had fallen asleep, and now he has a wooden leg and crutches, because of our incompetence. I hear screams from the site. We have to use dynamite to blast through the rock to make the Canal. I need to make sure they don't need my help, with what little strength I have left. Hopefully, this dysentery will not kill me for another week. I have not told the Site Manager about my dysentery yet, for he wouldn't care.
Sincerely,
Roberto Alvarez
FINALLY. I NEEDED A PRIMARY DOCUMENT FROM THE TIME THE CANAL WAS BEING BUILT. IT TOOK ME 2 HOURS TO FIND THIS.
